Cod – Gadus morhua
Although caught all year round, wild VSV cod is mainly caught during the winter season, when it’s in its best condition in terms of nutritional values. Cod spawns in March to May off the south coast but in April to May off the western fjords and off northern Iceland.
Cod is a groundfish that is most commonly found at a depth of 100-250 metres on Icelandic fishing grounds. Cod is a very good protein source, and contains a large amount of vitamin В and selenium, and is noted for its very healthy ratio of sodium and potassium.
Cod is one of the most popular fish VSV produces — this might have something to do with the fact that it’s amongst the most frequently consumed fish in Europe and North America.
Icelandic fisheries, VSV included, have been certified in accordance with the most stringent international requirements (Global Trust Certification) for cod fishing.
