VSV produces two types of fishmeal:
- NSM-meal (NorSeaMink) - High quality fishmeal
- Fish meal standard
VSV also produces fish oil. The raw material for fishmeal and fish oil production is mainly parts of herring, capelin, mackerel and blue whiting that are not utilised for human consumption. Fishmeal is made from the byproducts of VSV’s fish processing: spines, fish skin and innards.
Fishmeal is rich in protein and is largely used, along with the fish oil, in the production of feed for fish farming. The buyers are mainly fish feed producers in Norway, but fish pens in various European countries, including Iceland, are also fed fishmeal and fish oil from VSV. Fish oil is also used in the leather industry.
